Site Pictures

The children are encouraged to identify all areas and land marks and to learn their names. This helps their future experiences of mapping as well as helping them gain their bearings. Features of interest are always pointed out as well as hazards such as nettles or tree stumps.

Thistle rise - the path into the woodland is kept deliberately a little overgrown to partially obscure the path from the road. Nettles are pulled back on a regular basis by our team of volunteers.

Prickle corner - a good place to stop and wait. There is a spindle bush, two different thistles, holly saplings, a young hawthorn, nettles and a bramble growing here!

Nettle alley - nettles are our biggest hazard, but they are good for wildlife so we manage them! Long trousers and sleeves help.

The gate - is kept closed during the session. Two parallel pieces of pink rope surround the site providing a visual boundary which the children do not cross ( the nettles & brambles on the far side also act as a physical barrier & deterrent!
Base camp with semi-permanent shelter - The shelter is where we perch on our log seats in a circle to chat, listen, sing and have sharing times. Sometimes we just sit and look!  There is also a fire area. We are learning how to stay safe here before we are able to have a real one!

The construction area or mud play!

This is one of our favourite places in forest school. We do lots of mucky play here! (look at our activity pictures)

The climbing area - There aren't many trees that we can get into, so we have a special area to climb and jump about on that does not damage the trees and is safe for us to stretch ourselves physically.

These stepping stones are also in the climbing area, some of us can balance on the top one!

The glade - This area has been opened up and cleared to provide a small meadow area. It has been planted with wild grass and flower seeds and some spring bulbs. We are hoping for a lovely show next spring and summer.

The Loo - Yes, we do have toilet facilities and wet wipes!

We now have a shed for privacy and use camping portable toilets.

The sound area - This area is to be developed further. It has a nice hollow tree to bang on and the sycamore tree nearby has low branches which 'rustle' when you shake them.
