The children take part in a range of activities at Forest School. Some are planned in advance others arise from the children's own interests.

Sessions begin and end in the shelter. Forest school safety rules are learnt and activities discussed with the children's input respected. We end with a 'show & tell' time and a goodbye song.

123 where are you? This is a variation on hide and seek. The children hide and are then found by answering a call of "123 where are you?" with "123 over here". The sound is followed and the children found join the 'finders' until all the children are found and counted. Children who may find themselves 'alone' need only to call out "123 over here" and someone will go to them . This game is a key feature of forest school in all settings and makes the children feel safe in strange surroundings. It also leads to many 'finds' which spark off new activities.

Maths -size is important!

"Look, we've found a baby toad"

Bark rubbing using charcoal made on site.

Charcoal finding and drawing.

A tactile map showing the main areas is made. The children continue to add to this and use it to reference positions of key features and directions.

Bug hunting is another favourite activity. Together with bug boxes with a magnifying lid they search under deadwood and among the leaves & soil for wild mini-beasts!

Working together as a team is a crucial social skill the children need to learn.
Even learning to use basic tools like scissors is fun and all absorbing when leaves need cutting from their branches. These 2 boys spent over 20 minutes learning to use scissors efficiently.
Traditional crafts like weaving with willow are also introduced.
